I don't understand why people skip breakfast because to me, it is not only the most important meal of the day but by far, the most salivate-worthy meal too! However, as a savoury breakky lover, the usual eggs, avocado and sourdough bread combo that makes an appearance at every cafe that I go to can be a little mundane so when I read the Kepos St Kitchen's exotic menu, my tastebuds did a little dance.
Kepost St Kitchen is conveniently located at 96 Kepos St, Redfern... though if you ask me, it's more Waterloo/Surry Hills than it is Redfern. Regardless of the technical geographical location of the cafe... it is mighty delish!
I started off the day with the only thing that I would sip in the morning... Tea!
Minty Marrakesh
Soy Cappuccino
My breaky buddy ordered a cup of soy Cappuccino. I'm not really a coffee lover so I'm definitely not a pro at describing how it tasted (also because I didn't try it) but my breakky buddy told me that it was creamy and the taste of the coffee beans was just strong enought to kick start his day!
Zucchini fritters, smoked salmon, dill and poached eggs
Now, if you know my breakky habits at all - then you would know that I absolutely love corn fritters for breakfast, but at Kepos St Kitchen, they don't serve corn fritters... they have zucchini fritters.
I must say, I was a little skeptical at first when the zucchini fritters arrived at my table. I was a huge believer that fritters can only taste bellisimo, if it is made of corn... alas, I stand corrected! The zucchini fritters were perfect. It had a golden crunch when you first bite into it but the inside is light and fluffy. Coupled with the creamy poached eggs, salty smoked salmon and a drizzle of olive oil... I believe WOW is the only word that could be used to describe it. I'd go as far as saying that it was one of the best breakky I've ever had... and I don't say this often.
Mujaddara rice salad, soft boiled eggs, chicken, roasted nuts and herb dressing.
My friend and I also went for something extremely adventurous... the Mujaddara rice salad! As an Indonesian kid, eating rice for breakky isn't a novelty and I was excited to have a different kind of breakky adventure . I mean, we eat rice for breakky, lunch and dinner... I believe the philosophy is that rice should not be discriminated against by certain meals of the day.
I would say though, that this plate was extremely filling and would be better served as lunch but the flavours were spot! The egg was cooked to perfection - not too raw but still creamy and I absolutely love the sight of the bursting yolk when you cut into it with your fork. The chicken was tender and only lightly seasoned which was great because the rice salad was packed full of flavour! I definitely loved the flavour combo and the texture was a piece of art but I must say that it was FAR too filling for a lover of light breakfast.
I would happily return to Kepos St Kitchen for breakfast one day but it is quite pricey ($16-18 for a meal) so I would say that it isn't a place you would go to on a daily basis. However, if you ask me whether the price is worth the flavour... I would not hesitate to say yes, it certainly is!
